The Abilene Public Library’s Books on Wheels program started with a grant from the Abilene Community Foundation in January of 2005. The program delivers books and other library materials to six retirement communities in Abilene and to home-bound patrons.
The mission of the Abilene Public Library Books on Wheels Program is to provide library resources to meet the informational, educational, cultural, leisure, and recreational needs of the Abilene Community home-bound and their caregivers.
Volunteers assist in delivering the materials on a bi-weekly or monthly basis to the following retirement communities:
Abilene Plaza / Chisholm Manor Apartments
Brown Memorial Home
Brookdale (formerly Sterling House)
Home-bound deliveries can be arranged for monthly delivery. A home-bound patron eligible for home delivery is a resident of Abilene who is physically unable to visit the library due to physical disability or advanced age. Homebound status must be verified by the patron’s doctor.
