Kansas author Debbie Gassert will present her true crime book, Mighty Neighborly, during a community event and book signing on Friday, October 2, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Abilene Public Library, 209 NW 4th, Abilene, Kansas.
The presentation will give attendees a closer look at the research behind Mighty Neighborly, a Kansas true crime story involving a decades-old homicide, a controversial conviction, and the unanswered questions that continue to surround the case. Gassert will discuss how she approached the investigation, answer questions, and sign books.
In 2023, Gassert began researching a decades-old homicide that shook rural Kansas. After nearly two years of in-depth investigation, she published her true crime book, Mighty Neighborly, released on March 6, 2026. The book examines the 1980s murder of a disabled farmer in Washington County, Kansas, and the controversial conviction of a local chiropractor—secured without a witness, weapon, or recovered body. Drawing on court records, interviews, and historical context, Mighty Neighborly explores how justice unfolds in small communities and the lasting impact of unresolved questions.
